No, not formally. Financial and medical application need not be provided until you apply for residency before move-in. Upon move-in, you will be required to have completed financial and medical applications, the latter which includes a report from your physician. Informally, upon placing a deposit, depositors should be able to live safely and healthfully in an independent setting in the specific space they have chosen and have sufficient resources to meet the financial obligation. The SCPH rule of thumb is that income should be 1-2 times the monthly service fee and assets should be 3-4 times the entrance fee. Almost 50 years of experience has indicated that under normal conditions and financial planning, these amounts will assure your financial comfort for the rest of your life here.
A one-time fee that grants a resident the use of an accommodation and services at White Sands. This fee is not equity, nor can it be assigned or transferred to others. We currently offer two types of entrance fee agreements. Our standard agreement has been used at White Sands for over 40 years, with 10 revisions. This contract is amortized to zero over a five-year period (30 months in case of death). Thus, should someone change their mind for any reason, a portion is refunded on a straight-line basis up to the end of the 60th month. Our new 75% guaranteed repayment option limits amortization to 25% in exchange for an entrance fee that is 1.8 times as high. State law requires that entrance fees be completely refundable in the first 90 days save for a processing fee ($1,500).
Entrance fees are based on an accommodation's features. Views, size, patios, general location, etc. all factor into the entrance fee. Entrance fees also reflect area housing costs and are guaranteed not to increase once a reservation has been made.
Those who are concerned that they will not be able to obtain a particular space should not despair. Opportunities regularly present themselves. In addition, industry experience has shown that many accommodations will turn over during construction. Since such turnover will be apportioned by deposit seniority, the best way to get that eventual ideal space is first, to call ahead to determine availability; and second, place your class='anchor' name on the wait-list to insure you place in line for the next available apartment. If you have additional questions or concerns, please call Patricia Dale at 858-450-5102.
Services vary per accommodation and include: meals; housekeeping; linen services; utilities; basic phone service and cable TV; the wellness program; emergency medical support; security; maintenance and landscaping; use of common spaces on the 8 acre beachside campus; educational, social, and recreational programs; and more.
You will have the same staff for five out of seven days a week for a month.
The aides are rotated to different sections of Personal Care every month. This way all the staff members have a chance to get to know you and no one will be a stranger.
You may have visitors anytime you like. All visitors need to check in at the front lobby and get a guest badge before visiting. There are no formal hours.
You may leave the facility anytime you like. Just be sure to let a staff member in Personal Care know you are leaving, where you are going and when we can expect you back. Any contact phone numbers would be helpful as well. If a family member is taking you out, please make sure they let the staff know.
Your personal laundry will be done once a week on a per piece basis. The aides will fill out a laundry slip of all the items you need washed and send them out to the laundry. The turn around is approximately 24-36 hours. Some accommodations in the East Building include laundry hookups. The Main Building includes washers and dryers on each floor for your own use. You will provide your own towels and sheets. However, these items will be washed at no additional charge to you.
Activities are provided on a daily basis. Our Director of Activities and aides will inform you on a daily basis of each day's events. There are no additional charges for your participation in activities. Two bus trips away from the facility are provided monthly.
If you are physically and mentally capable of participating you are always welcome to attend residential activities. Entertainment, dinners, large events, etc. are open to ALL White Sands residents.
To ensure that each outing matches the needs and abilities of the residents participating, trips or outings designed for independent living residents are rated according to difficulty. Adequate ambulation and cognitive readiness, based on the trip's rating, are required. Assisted Living residents attending such a trip must have a companion with him/her; this may be a relative, friend, or hired staff.
The Sandpiper is published weekly by White Sands residents. It lists current and upcoming activities. Channel 19 on your television is available to you at all times to review activities and notices of interest. The Sandcastle is an Assisted Living newsletter published weekly, listing current activities. An Assisted Living activities calendar is distributed monthly as well.
We can charge certain items to your monthly bill. The beauty shop services, however,
should be worked out separately with the beauty shop personnel, as we do not bill for this service. You, or the person paying your bills, will be billed directly.
Yes, dogs and cats are allowed at White Sands. Some restrictions do apply, so please consult with the Marketing Director or Director of Social Services for details.
No, however, many residents prefer to sit in the same spot. We will try to make sure that you are comfortably seated in an area of your liking until your routine is established.
What are the meal times in the Personal Care Dining Room?
You may have Tray Service in your room for all meals at no additional charge. Please let your aide know you wish to eat in your room so arrangements can be made for a tray to be sent to your room.
SCPH (Southern California Presbyterian Homes) is our parent organization. White Sands was the first SCPH facility, opening in 1956. Since then, SCPH has grown to include 29 other facilities throughout Southern California. It is a nationally respected, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing housing and services for seniors. As a nonprofit, it is able to assure its residents that shareholders are not a primary focus; they are. Since its inception, SCPH has been nondenominational and it now has no legal or financial ties to the Presbyterian Church. All faiths are welcome.
