"We Found Our Place in the Sun."
Residents talk about their love affair with life at The White Sands of La Jolla.
“I always tell people ‘I think I’m gonna like it (at White Sands)—but I’ve only been here for 23 years.’ The management is certainly interested in the residents, always willing to listen to what they have to say and to make an effort to please the residents. New residents always become a part of the family very quickly once they get here.”
-Jack Patton, resident for 23 years
“I came for the real estate and I stayed for the community.”
–Sherri Chessen, resident for 6 months
“Having a network and community here means I am held up and taken care of through thick and thin. The other residents are there to take care of me and I’m there to take care of them—though always I get more from taking care of them than anything. The key is community and support. My sweetie’s working on dementia and it’s so good for him to be surrounded by people that truly care for him.”
–Mary Dersam, resident for over 1 year
“I find Assisted Living a little like hotel living. I’m always surprised to find that even my bed is turned back for me every day. I think the staff is great—everyone I have met is so friendly!”
-Leona Plummer, resident for 7 years
“The companionship of my fellow residents is the thing I value most about White Sands, followed closely by the care and concern I get from the staff.”
-Bill Stone, resident for 14 years
“Things good and bad can happen suddenly. There are friends here 24/7 to help celebrate or console, mourn or reassure. That degree of support just wouldn’t be available if we were still in our previous home by ourselves. The sense of both community and personal privacy is powerful here at White Sands and creates the highest possible quality of life.”
-Mary Heglar, resident for 21 years
“My parents were residents here for many years, and during that time our family was always welcome. As a result of the loving care my parents received, Bob and I decided to move here ourselves. Now our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are able to come and visit any time and take advantage of all the wonderful things White Sands offers the residents. You can find them in the pool or beach on many weekends. Our dog Rosy also seems to be loved by all!”
-Annette Henry, resident for 2 years
“We left our lake home in the woods in northern Minnesota to live on the Pacific Ocean where we can walk and ride our bicycles year-round, get the best medical care in the immediate vicinity, and enjoy invigorating conversations with our new friends. The biggest joy for us is to watch our 10 grandchildren shift their love of our small lake to our home on the world’s biggest ‘lake’ here at White Sands.”
-Phil and Barb Weiler, residents for 4 years
The White Sands of La Jolla is a wonderful pace to live. Although it is like a beautiful resort with all the amenities, it is home to me. The other residents have become my extended family. It doesn’t get much better than this.
-Gwenn Carlson, resident for 11 years
"We weren't planning to come for another five years, but when the perfect unit opened up, we jumped for it and are so glad we did! The setting and the people are even better than being at sea on our recent cruise! What a way to enjoy retirement!"
-Carolyn Shadle and John Meyer, residents for 1 year
